Daily maintenance: prevention is better than repair
Most damage to a wooden floor does not occur all at once, but from small things that pile up. Sand and grit act like sandpaper under shoes and furniture legs. Therefore, sweep or vacuum regularly and use felt pads under chairs and tables. Never mop when soaking wet: wood and water do not mix well. A slightly damp cloth with a pH-neutral cleaning agent is sufficient.
Maintain proper finish
Whether your floor is oiled or varnished determines the maintenance. An oiled floor requires periodic re-oiling, so that small scratches disappear automatically. A varnished floor protects for a longer period of time, but if it wears out, the entire layer has to be replaced. Don't know which finish you have? Test it with a drop of water: if it is absorbed slowly, the floor is probably oiled.
